| Symptoms |
BackOnTrack Solutions |
| Windows crash |
If Windows crashes, whatever the reason, BackOnTrack can restore the system to a clean and healthy state. |
| Bad performance |
When processing power slows, restore your hard drive to the state that it was in when you took a “snapshot” - that´s how it will work after restoring. |
| Software collisions |
If a new application does not work well in your current system setup, just uninstall by reverting back to your system snapshot! |
| Incomplete uninstall |
Some applications are hard to uninstall completely. BackOnTrack effectively deletes any unwanted installations. |
| Viruses |
Anti-virus programs are vulnerable to new viruses. BackOnTrack is not an anti-virus application, but a perfect complement to your current program should a virus sneak past the computer´s defenses. BackOnTrack Instant Restore will delete any files that were not there when the snapshot was taken, thus eradicating viruses as well as any changes made by these viruses. |
| Spyware |
If someone installed anything on your machine that may compromise your integrity, restoring will delete it. |
| Driver problems |
Sometimes a device driver can cause serious problems such as system crash. Restoring will get rid of a driver that was not there when the snapshot was taken. |
| Unwanted settings |
If somebody tampered with system settings, BackOnTrack will restore the computer. This is particularly useful with shared or public computers. |
| Offensive content |
BackOnTrack technology can be configured to restore the entire machine, including personal folders. This means getting rid of junk, offensive material, etc. (Perfect for public computers or a computer in a shared space). |
| File accidentally changed and saved |
Document Rollback will recover the earlier version in seconds. This backup is automatic and continuous. |
| File accidentally deleted |
The Document Archive provides access to the full document history, including files that have been deleted and overwritten on the drive. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is BackOnTrack?
A: BackOnTrack is an elegant and effective software program that allows even inexperienced PC users to take their computers back to a clean and healthy state. It provides the unprecedented ability to retrieve deleted or modified files, undo software installs and recover from system crashes or virus attacks.
Q: How does BackOnTrack Work ?
A: The user decides when the computer is in a clean and healthy state, and sets a snapshot. BackOnTrack then uses a small portion of a PC’s hard drive to log all changes made to system and application files. If something goes wrong BackOnTrack can undo all the changes since the snapshot, effectively returning the system to the clean and healthy state, but with all personal digital media unaffected. This works even if Windows has crashed. With BackOnTrack, you can also recover old versions of a document, restore corrupt files, and retrieve deleted files (even after emptying the Recycle Bin and writing over the area of the disk where the file existed)!
Q: Who should use BackOnTrack ?
A: BackOnTrack is a tool which allows the PC users themselves to keep their machines in perfect condition, without the help of professionals. This benefits IT and support staff, who can spend more time on more difficult technical issues, hardware, security and strategic issues.
Q: Where does BackOnTrack store old files ?
A: This information is stored to the local hard drive, in a hidden area.
Q: Will BackOnTrack’s history fill-up the hard drive ?
A: No. Because BackOnTrack records only the information that has changed, it usually only requires a small segment of the hard drive to save a vast amount of history. Unlike other solutions like GoBack, BackOnTrack ignores changes to folders like My Documents and the Desktop, further reducing the load on the drive. And whenever a new snapshot is created, disk space will be freed.
Q: Does BackOnTrack need to be opened every time the computer is rebooted ?
A: No. Once installed, BackOnTrack runs automatically, working quietly in the background. No further action is required by the user – until BackOnTrack is needed. If the system is updated, say with new software or Windows updates, it is usually a good idea to open BackOnTrack and create a new snapshot.
Q: Aren’t traditional backup solutions enough ?
A: BackOnTrack supplements traditional backup procedures and makes up for their shortcomings. Traditional backup is time-consuming and can be complicated. Many users back up their files very infrequently, if ever. Because BackOnTrack’s Rollback feature is quick, transparent and requires no special action from the user, there will always be a recent backup of personal files. Because the backup is local, you will be protected even when traveling with a laptop away from network resources. As for system files, these are sometimes backed up in the form of a baseline image. This is a complete copy of the entire hard drive. But because creating such an image (using products such as Norton Ghost) is often complicated and time-consuming, this method is usually mostly used by IT staff for baseline images, ie a last resort for restoring the machine. Restoring to such an image will destroy all changes to the system, including recently installed applications as well as documents, images, video and music.
Q: Does BackOnTrack make traditional backup systems obsolete ?
A: No. BackOnTrack is not meant to replace traditional backups, but instead provides recoverability for the time since the last backup. Further, it offers the ability to recover from a major system crash without the need for any special boot disks, operating system disks or time-consuming re-imaging processes, which means that it is perfect for laptops used out of the office or away from home. (BackOnTrack cannot recover the computer in case of physical damage to the drive.)
Q: Will BackOnTrack affect computer speed ?
A: While using most programs, there is no noticeable change in computer performance.
Q: Is work lost when restoring ?
A: No. Personal files stored in standard locations (Desktop, My Documents, Shared Documents, etc) are unaffected by restore. Other locations (say, a photo folder directly on the C: root) can be protected by right-clicking and selecting BackOnTrack > User data. This data is then also protected by Rollback. In Professional and Public, every folder can be separately configured for Restore and Rollback protection.
Q: How far back can BackOnTrack restore my computer ?
A: BackOnTrack Instant Restore can go as far back as the last snapshot. This means, in principle, that BackOnTrack can restore a computer to the time when BackOnTrack itself was installed. The amount of disk space used will grow over time, since BackOnTrack’s log file will list an increasing number of events. Disk space usage will also increase if a large file or application that was present in the snapshot is subsequently removed. BackOnTrack will store copies of all files that are removed, so that they can be restored in case of disaster.
Recommended usage is to create a new snapshot with regular intervals, say once a week or once a month. This will limit how far back the user can go, since there is only one snapshot. But it will ensure that there is a reasonably up-to-date system configuration to restore to. Also, this habit will effectively make disk space usage less of an issue, since log files and backups are cleared whenever a new snapshot is made.
Q: How far back does the Rollback feature keep track of previous versions ?
A: Document Rollback has no time limit. However, in the interest of not wasting disk space, BackOnTrack Home is configured to keep only the last 10 versions, and to save backups of modified files no more often than once every ten minutes. Also, files larger than 30 MB are not covered. All these parameters can be configured in the Professional edition.
Q: My computer does not work. If I install BackOnTrack, will it fix the problem ?
A: No. BackOnTrack must be installed on a working machine, and cannot restore to a time further back than the moment of installation.
Q: What is Automatic Restore ?
A: Automatic restore resets the computer to a predefined clean and healthy state at each reboot. It is an ideal solution for computer labs, libraries and other public access computers. It is available in the Professional and Public editions.
Q: What is Password Protection ?
A: Password protection prevents unauthorized access to program features.
Q: Can BackOnTrack run on network workstations ?
A: Yes, BackOnTrack can be installed on computers connected to a network. It will protect all data saved to the local drive(s). However, BackOnTrack will not protect data saved to a network drive.
